The Elevation is Irrelevant

A lesson from a Portuguese village

In the last 8 days, I've had participants in our Business Growth Strategy Masterclass with experience ranging from, just started "solopreneurs" to seasoned business professionals with experience in multimillion dollar ventures.  I was very glad that I had included one particular slide in the presentation.  It featured an image of a small rise - to call it a peak may be a stretch - above a little village of Monsanto, Portugal - population 766.

In the class, I use the analogy of climbing to a peak as representative of growing your business.  By the time I share this image from Monsanto, I've shared images of lofty summits like Wyoming's Grand Tetons and Switzerland's Matterhorn.

While those towering and rugged peaks inspire thoughts of grandeur, the reality is that many small businesses don't aspire to that.  They wish to do what they love, they want to be profitable, and achieve great success - but their peak may not be the Matterhorn.  And, that's okay.

It isn't so much the fame of the mountain, nor the height of the peak that matters.  What matters is that you choose the peak, chart the course, and work toward it.  That sums up several key strategy-related concepts - be deliberate, be informed, and ensure tactics are all aligned with your chosen direction.

For companies large and small, the principles of strategy all apply in the pursuit of growth.
